Bollywood’s growing international presence The awards come as Bollywood has been gaining traction in international markets in recent years. India is the world’s largest movie producer, making 800-1000 films annually and earning about Rs60bn from box office sales. Of total ticket sales, only about 10 per cent of admissions come from foreign releases. But the industry’s overseas profile has been growing through films such as Monsoon Wedding or Bend it Like Beckham, which bring together western film-making styles with Indian or non-resident Indian subjects. Bollywood studios have increasingly begun to corporatise and to link up with their overseas peers. In the most recent example, the TV 18 Group, the country’s biggest news channel, agreed to pool resources with Viacom, which owns the MTV music channel as well as Dreamworks and Paramount studios. As part of the tie-up, the pair agreed to cooperate on making films for Indian audiences.Another Indian film-maker, UTV Motion Pictures, controlled by Indian businessman Ronnie Screwvala, has linked up with Rupert Murdoch’s 20th Century Fox to produce several movies, including The Namesake
